After years living and working here, these are the spots I share with clients — the real Clay County, beyond the “small towns, big passions” tagline. Green Cove Springs. A cozy spot near the spring pool roasting beans from sister company Brass Tacks. Try the house Butterbeer — and check the “Name of the Day” board for free coffee.
Orange Park. Hand-brewed coffee, all-day breakfast, gourmet in-house donuts, plus craft beer and wine at night.
Middleburg. You’ll know it by the moose statue out front — go for the signature Moose Mocha.
Green Cove Springs. Coffee plus new and used books, with weekly events and story times. A true local gem.
Keystone Heights. A family-run roaster with a rotating world menu — and a certified tea sommelier on staff.
Orange Park. “Italian quality at America’s pace” — a quick, quality drive-thru fix.
Fleming Island. Open since 1963 with great views over Swimming Pen Creek. Come by car or boat for gator tail, fried shrimp, catfish, and seafood platters. A genuine institution.
Middleburg. A charming stop for a cupcake or a slice of pie with outdoor seating, near historic Brickyard Road.
Beyond these, dining runs from award-winning barbecue to Puerto Rican, Caribbean, Italian, Mexican, Thai, and Mediterranean — a surprising range for “small towns.”
Green Cove Springs. The historic spring-fed pool holds a steady 77 degrees year-round, with river access, playgrounds, and pavilions.
150 acres on Black Creek — once Florida’s first Girl Scout camp, now open for hiking, birding, fishing, and camping.
Lake Asbury. A 90-acre park with a fishing pond, disc golf, courts, and playgrounds, donated by the Van Zant family.
Keystone Heights. Ravines, hiking, camping, and 25,000+ acres of state forest for biking, riding, and paddling.
Clay County is the birthplace of Southern Rock. Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote much of their early music at the legendary “Hell House” along Peters Creek near Green Cove Springs, and Ronnie Van Zant’s tribute street, Brickyard Road in Middleburg, inspired the Johnny Van Zant song. History buffs will also love the Camp Blanding Museum (WWII), the Military Museum of North Florida, historic Penney Farms, and St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church — one of the oldest wooden churches in Florida. Mark your calendar for the annual North Florida Scottish Highland Games, and if you’re feeling adventurous, test your skills at The FIRM rally race-car course at the Keystone Heights Airport.
